Tips on Dating a Cougar

Ever since Courtney Cox stepped on to the scene in Cougar Town there has certainly been a surge in audience of both cougar women looking for younger men (generally and affectionately known as cubs) and of course younger men looking for cougars.

If you’ve stumbled across Cougar Dating Site AND reading this article of course you have probably made the decision, or now very close, to making the decision to join the very exciting arena of online dating and seeking out the cougar who is just right for you – but what forms the difference between dating a cougar, and although don’t want to brand so callously, a younger women….well much.

Often you can usually categorise why cougar women look for younger guys in to two distinct reasons. I’m afraid for the male it is generally one (answers on a postcard please J ) but you do need to look beyond that in order to date a cougar. The two reasons mentioned can be categorised to:

1. A stale and unsatisfying marriage or relationship;
2. Single cougars who enjoy the thrill of a younger males attraction to them;

This is not intended to be stereotypical or patronising in anyway but generally browsing through the profiles on cougar dating sites such as this one the descriptions added generally point to one of the two categories above.

Like most women, although particularly with cougars, it’s important to show attraction, understanding and of course make the lady feel special.

Here are some cougar dating tips that we hope help you plan your date and of course above all make a success of it!

Speak First

When it comes to dating in general it’s all about the communication. Don’t just take each other’s mobile numbers and text short messages back and forth. Arrange a call and aim to speak at least three times before you meet up. Make sure the call is at a time in the day when you are not rushed or under pressure. Early evening just after dinner is an ideal time, you are more relaxed.

Once you have spoken on a few occasions and feel comfortable with each other it’s time to arrange a meet.

Dress Smartly

This is always a stumbling block. Don’t just arrive in a pair of baggy ripped jeans and a FCUK t-shirt. Show a little maturity. Dress smartly for the occasion. Smart jeans are acceptable and a casual shirt with polished shoes wouldn’t be out of place – although make sure it’s in keeping with the location. Make a smart impression with a mature outlook. Don’t start speaking like Beavis and Butthead (or worse) it will be an instant turn-off.

Body of a Cub but Mind of a Man

This re-iterates a good point from the section above. When a cougar is looking for a younger male they are generally looking for the body, outlook and thrill of being with a much younger male who finds them physically and personably attractive. The mindset and attitude is much different. A cougar is not looking to date someone immature; this is going to be a big turn-off.

5 Topic Rule

Some of us men are extremely confident, can hold a conversation with just about anyone and have the ability to talk about something as boring as knitting whilst still having the focus and attention. Then there are the rest of us.

It’s very easy on a date for the conversation to go a little bit, well, stale. This is where the 5 Topic rule comes in. Before your date have in your mind 5 topics of conversation that would first be interesting to talk about – and second dodge the awkward airs of silence only to be broken by the sound of you (or even worse your date) asking for the bill.

The topics can be something current in the news - although best to avoid anything unpleasant or strong topical debates, which could see your first and probably last argument quite quickly – or perhaps interesting things that you have done.

Try not to use your first 5 in the first 10 minutes, if the conversation becomes quite later on in to the date you’ll have nothing to draw upon and panicking and saying something just to break the silence usually follows with the thought ‘….now why did I say that!’

Stay Safe

Whilst online dating is a fun way to meet new people you need to stay safe. Always let friends and family know where you are going, don’t divulge personal details too soon and always meet for your first date in a public place with lots of people. Lunchtime meets if you both work in the same area can be a good idea.
